Six Urban Residences
Six Urban Residences in Richmond
1. Project Overview
Making best use of an originally vacant block with an associated almost derelict Victorian house at the front, the ‘La Mode’ development creates a beautiful, site-specific and efficient response to a historic Richmond Hill quarter.
Comprising 6 individual and luxurious urban residences, together with an amazing renovation/extension of the heritage house, the abundance of internal space gathered around multiple garden spaces each, is a rare combination in an otherwise tightly built-up area.
The project has been the winner of the 2013 bdav 10 Star Challenge in the Multi-Res Category, and is currently one of the Finalists as a contender for the 2017 Sustainability Awards.
3. Project Innovation, or ‘the buzz we like to create’
Set opposite a converted shoe factory, the urban residences play with aspects of the craftmanship that used to dominate the area as well as the ‘fashion’ aspect that now is an essential part of Richmond.
All houses comprise a north-facing garden with associated living areas and outdoor entertaining. Central to the designs, is an additional internal courtyard, that allows north light back into the front of the house, and that assists with cross ventilation and light access to the center of the house. An elevated entertaining space on the roof creates beautiful views for ‘that special occasion’.
4. Design Response
The houses become part of the urban fabric and sit comfortable within typical proportions and heights of the area. Semi-public spaces are created in front of the houses, and glimpses into the courtyards give a hint of what lies behind the naturally crafted timber facades.
Designed as a fully sustainable scheme, the houses are based on passive solar design principles. They comprise lots of natural and sustainable materials, thermally broken windows with double glazing, Solar Hot Water, private rain gardens, rainwater tnaks, and many more features.
As a winner of the 2013 BDAV 10 Star Challenge, some slight modifications would raise the energy rating up to 10 Stars – practically energy neutral !
